Naat Foundation

Projects by New Age Actors’ Theatre Foundation

NAAT Foundation is dedicated to preserving Assam’s rich theatrical and puppetry traditions while using them as powerful tools for social awareness and empowerment. Our projects focus on reviving traditional art forms, engaging communities, and addressing key social issues through performances, workshops, and training programs.

1. Reviving Traditional Folk Arts

NAAT is actively working to revive Putola Naas, Ankiya Bhaona, and Sattriya mask making. Through research, performances, and training, we aim to sustain these traditional art forms and make them relevant for contemporary audiences. Our efforts include training young artists and creating new productions that blend traditional styles with modern storytelling.

2. Puppetshala – Training the Next Generation

Under Puppetshala, we are training children and adolescents in three villages in Sonapur and adolescent girls from five villages in Hajo in traditional puppet making and performance. The initiative focuses on skill-building while also fostering confidence, creativity, and leadership among young learners, especially girls.

3. Folk Lore Retold – Puppetry for Gender Equality

We are using Putola Naas to critically examine the portrayal of women in Assamese folklore. Through performances and discussions, we challenge traditional narratives that normalize gender-based violence and early marriage, fostering conversations about gender equality and women’s empowerment.

4. Puppetry and Theatre for Social Change

NAAT uses puppetry and street theatre as alternative media to spread awareness on critical social issues. Our productions have addressed themes such as:

  • Girls’ education, early marriage prevention, and women’s health

  • Economic empowerment of rural women in handloom and agriculture

  • Mental health awareness and gender-based violence

  • Road safety, environmental conservation, and plastic pollution

Through performances in schools, villages, and public spaces, we engage audiences and encourage discussions on these important topics.

5. Community Engagement and Capacity Building

Beyond performances, NAAT conducts workshops for various groups, including school children, university students, and rural artisans. Our workshops on storytelling, puppet-making, scriptwriting, and performance skills not only preserve artistic traditions but also provide livelihood opportunities and creative expression for marginalized communities.

Through these diverse projects, NAAT Foundation remains committed to using the power of theatre and puppetry to drive meaningful social change, empower communities, and ensure that Assam’s rich cultural heritage thrives for future generations.
