Puppet People Assam

Puppet People Assam, the puppetry division of NAAT, was established in 2013 by Drishana Kalita, with the aim of preserving and promoting Assam’s cultural heritage, including Sattriya mask making and Putola Naas.

We delve into the immense potential of traditional art forms as catalysts for social transformation and economic empowerment. Our initiative, Puppetshala, serves as a dynamic platform where children and adolescents across seven villages in Assam’s Kamrup district are trained in the intricate crafts of puppet-making and performance. Through this initiative, we are not only preserving the heritage of Assam’s folk puppetry but also equipping young learners with artistic and entrepreneurial skills that can open pathways to sustainable livelihoods.

A core pillar of our work is the reimagination of folklore through the lens of folk puppetry. By revisiting and reshaping traditional narratives, we seek to challenge deep-rooted gender stereotypes and ignite discussions on crucial social issues such as the representation of women in folktales, gender-based violence, and the pressing concerns of early marriage. By adapting these stories into puppetry performances, we engage communities in thought-provoking dialogue, encouraging reflection and change.

At the heart of our efforts lies Putola Naas, Assam’s indigenous puppetry tradition, which we are revitalizing as both a cultural treasure and a medium for advocacy. Our vision extends beyond preservation—we aim to cultivate a new generation of puppeteers, with a special focus on empowering young girls and women. By training them in every aspect of puppetry, from crafting and scripting to performance and storytelling, we provide them with a voice to share their own narratives of resilience and self-determination.

Through this work, we aspire to spark a socio-cultural movement where artistic heritage becomes a vehicle for activism. By weaving together Assam’s rich performing arts traditions with contemporary social discourse, we transform puppetry into a compelling tool for gender equality, storytelling, and grassroots empowerment. Our ultimate goal is to create a thriving ecosystem where tradition and innovation converge, ensuring that the voices of marginalized communities—especially women and girls—are not only heard but celebrated through the powerful medium of puppetry.
